Inaugural Medical Mission to Uruagu Nnewi, Nigeria

June 2015 marks the anniversary of the first every medical mission conducted by the Eunice Akosa Foundation. With the help of the Akosa family and local volunteers, the foundation was able to conduct bio-medical screening on over 100 people. The aim of the medical mission is to provide free screening to low income locals who may not have to opportunities to go to the hospital while also raising awareness of illness that may not be noticed until it is fatal.

Second NIGERIA Mission Summary

Eunice Akosa was a lady that always tried to help the less fortunate, and in her memory, her children created the Eunice Akosa Foundation- a non-for-profit organization whose goals and mission are to emulate the virtues of Eunice Akosa. This year, majority of the Akosa family from all over the world arrived Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria to continue the works of the late Mrs. Eunice Akosa in helping and serving the underserved. The foundation provided free medical biometric screenings, school supplies for two local primary school, and also visited a local leprosy home.

The event was the second mission trip and was a lot more successful than the first. Over 300 individuals received medical attentions including free medication, dental supplies, screening and counselling by medical practitioners on how to improve their health, sustain their good health and/or prevent poor health. The goal of the mission trip was to serve the underserved as well as provide free primary health care. This was done via a thorough biometric screening that included free body weight and height measurements to assess risk of overweight and obesity; blood pressure measurement to assess risk of hypertension; blood sugar level check to assess risk of diabetes mellitus; lastly, screening of proteins in the urine to assess risk of kidney malfunction. After undergoing these various screening, participants were counselled by medical doctors who looked at the bigger picture based on the assessment results and provided medical recommendations and/or referrals on ways to improve their health.

The two local primary schools that benefitted from this 2nd mission were; Nwafor Central Primary School Uruagu, Nnewi, and Okwuani Central Primary School Nnewichi, Nnewi. The students were provided with some essential school supplies such as school bags, writing materials, water bottles, shirts etc... The leprosy centre known as “Father Damian’s Memorial Leprosy and TB Center, Amichi” was visited and a donation of money was provided to the residents for sustenance of their families as they are still shunned by the society.

A VISIT TO NEURO SABER, COLOMBIA (2019, 2022, 2026)

Neuro Saber is a nonprofit organization founded by Dr. Blanca Nelly Mora, a physical therapist specializing in neurological rehabilitation. While working in a hospital, she saw a need for a place where abandoned and neglected children, teens, and adults with mental disabilities ranging from moderate to severe could live, be loved, and receive the healthcare, rehabilitation, education, and therapy they needed. With the support of Colombian Child Protective Services, she left her job and established Neuro Saber.

Today, Neuro Saber is home to 81 residents ranging in age from 12 to 55 years old. In addition to receiving medical care, they have a place they can call home and experience love and support. The staff consists mainly of students completing their practicum placements and volunteers. We were very fortunate to witness how one place can change so many lives and hope to continue supporting this beautiful cause.

2019 Mission Trip

During EAF’s December 2019 visit to Neuro Saber, the Foundation donated toys, including games and bracelets, as well as a monetary donation to support the organization and its residents.

2022 Mission Trip

The 2022 visit provided an opportunity to celebrate the holidays with the children, where EAF provided lunch and presents.

2026 Mission Trip

The Foundation continued its support of Neuro Saber during a time when recent political and economic challenges had led to a significant reduction in government aid. In response, EAF provided adult and children’s diapers on three separate occasions, as well as liquid nutrition. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity and compassion shown by our supporters, which allows us to continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of these vulnerable children.
